Hypnosis without Borders

Bringing hypnosis where it is most needed

We train health professionals in conflict and crisis areas — by video, by volunteers.

Hypnosis without Borders (HWB) is an international charity that brings together doctors and psychologists from around the world to teach clinical hypnosis to health staff working in conflict and crisis areas. Our trainers volunteer their time and teach by live video, so training reaches teams wherever they are.

A registered Scottish charity (No. SC054664), created with the support of the European Society of Hypnosis and the International Society of Hypnosis.

Where we are teaching now

Our first training programme has been running with health staff in Gaza. Physiotherapists, mental-health professionals and rehabilitation teams learn hypnotic and relaxation techniques in regular video sessions with our volunteer trainers.

Participants report using the techniques in their daily work: relaxation methods that prepare patients for physiotherapy, imagery techniques used alongside pain care, and the same tools to wind down and sleep after difficult shifts.

Further projects are in preparation, including in Ukraine, South America and Afghanistan.

What is clinical hypnosis?

Clinical hypnosis is not stage hypnosis. It is a set of focused-attention and imagery techniques that registered health professionals use alongside ordinary medical and psychological care — most often to help with pain, anxiety and sleep.

We teach these techniques to qualified health staff, for use within their own scope of practice. We do not treat patients ourselves.

Hypnosis without Borders is looking for volunteer trainers and supporters.
