About us and contact

Who we are

Hypnosis without Borders (HWB) is a registered, non-political and non-governmental charity. We bring together doctors and psychologists from many countries to teach clinical hypnosis to health staff in conflict and crisis areas. All of our trainers are registered in their own country and recognised as hypnosis trainers by the European Society of Hypnosis (ESH) or the International Society of Hypnosis (ISH).

HWB was created with the support of ESH and ISH; you can read more about this work on the ESH Crisis Intervention Committee page.

We were registered as a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO) in October 2025. Our registration is public — you can verify us on the Scottish Charity Register.

Independent and non-political

We are independent and take no positions on the conflicts in the regions where we work. We train health professionals wherever the need is greatest.

How the training works

Training happens where the need is — without travel.

  • Live video sessions connect a volunteer trainer with a local group of health professionals.
  • Local translators support the sessions where needed.
  • Courses are short, practical modules of around two hours — from progressive muscle relaxation to imagery-based techniques used in the management of pain and anxiety.
  • Participants practise with each other during the sessions and receive a certificate of participation.

We are committed to evaluating our training and building research into what we provide, so that it keeps improving for the people we teach.

For patients — and for themselves

Health staff working in crisis conditions carry a heavy load. The techniques we teach are tools for their patients' care, and for their own wellbeing.

Safety and scope

Our trainers are registered clinicians, recognised as hypnosis trainers by ESH or ISH. The people we train are qualified health professionals. Everything we teach is meant for use within participants' own scope of practice, as a complement to medical and psychological care. Hypnosis without Borders does not provide treatment to members of the public.
